Title |
The Journey of the Highwaymen |
Summary |
The Highwaymen were a group of African-American painters from the Ft Pierce area of central eastern coastal Florida who were preoccupied with making a living by painting personal renditions of the Florida landscape. Their work hovered between the naive folk traditions and the more sophisticated work of earlier generations of well trained artists. This book brings together examples of the work of all 26 artists alongside the archetypical tropical scenes of A.E. Backus, Florida's preeminent landscape artist and mentor to the Highwaymen. |
