Title |
Tropical Light: The Art of A. E. Backus |
Summary |
Artist A. E. Backus (1906-1990) portrayed Florida's lush tropical landscape, and his works became the definitive images of the state. As author Natasha Kuzmanovic relates in this scrupulously researched text, Backus also possessed an extraordinary humanitarian spirit. He drew no lines of distinction between rich and poor, black and white and his studio door was open to all. The circle of African- Americans he mentored are known as the Highwaymen. His mural "Tropical Landscape with Birds" is hanging in the Beaches Museum. The painting was completed in 1949 and originally hung in The Oceanic Hotel, Jacksonville Beach, FL. |
